英語以形為先,注重形式結(jié)構(gòu);漢語以意為先,講究語義邏輯通達。正如王力先生所說: 西洋語法是硬的,沒有彈性的;中國語法是軟的,富于彈性的。惟其是硬的,所以西洋語法有許多呆板的要求……;惟其是軟的,所以中國語法只以達意為主……(王力 1984:141)
但是,王力先生所謂的“硬”及“沒有彈性”和“軟”及“富于彈性”,主要是以西洋語法為參照物,針對西洋語言和漢語在形式結(jié)構(gòu)上的差異而言的。如果從英語重形合和漢語重意合,即從英漢兩種語言各自的構(gòu)形與傳意有機統(tǒng)一的信息傳遞模式的角度來看,客觀地說,無論是英語還是漢語,都有“硬的”一面,也有“軟的”一面。英語“硬的”一面,在于其對以主謂結(jié)構(gòu)為核心的形式結(jié)構(gòu)的“呆板的要求”;英語“軟的”一面,在于其“富于彈性”的傳意方法或手段,對承載信息的具體語言實體采取靈活、多樣的態(tài)度。漢語“硬的”一面,在于其對語義通達、邏輯事理順序的“呆板的要求”;漢語“軟的”一面,在于其“富于彈性”的形式結(jié)構(gòu),承載信息的具體語言實體各式各樣,不需要按照英語的主謂結(jié)構(gòu)那樣一一對號入座。因此,對于從事英漢翻譯實踐活動的普通譯者而言,如何將這些硬道理和軟道理運用到翻譯實踐活動中去,具有十分重要的實踐意義。
我們不妨用兩個英漢翻譯實例來說明這個問題,并用以體現(xiàn)正確認識英語重形合、漢語重意合的概念,將這些硬道理和軟道理運用到具體的翻譯活動中去,具有十分重要的實踐意義。這兩個譯例的原文分別出自薩克雷(William Makepeace Thackeray)的成名作《名利場》(Vanity Fair)第二章和海因茨(Carl Heintze)的短篇小說《回家》(Going Home)。
